The consensus on the new caterers was that, although some teething problems were experienced, the purvey was good and augured well for future events. It was a treat for the 91 GROGs present to have Roy Dingwall back in his familiar role as Chairman. Seemingly restored to excellent health, Roy was as outrageous as ever and, in a "pot calling the kettle black" scenario, he lamented on the dress sense of some of those present. Of course, you can't have Roy without some reference to the Glasgow Academical Club, which was duly made in his usual understated, non-partisan way. Roy described the guest speaker, Steve Munro, as a former Scottish rugby internationalist and current Financial Adviser who would be happy to take questions at the end, though he didn’t elaborate on what. Steve began by reacquainting himself with some familiar faces from his playing days. His complimentary comments about Bobby Low and Murray Clayton were not easily recognised by others present. He presented an interesting and illuminating summary of his own rugby career, starting with Ayr RFC then West of Scotland and 10 full Scotland caps. Like many of the audience, Steve has very happy memories of amateur rugby in Scotland during the late 70's and early 80’s and recalled the vibrant social scene around Glasgow rugby then. He gained his first cap in 1980, against Ireland at Landsdowne Road. Although not taking all the blame for Scotland's defeat in that game, he still recalls "shanking" the ball when kicking ahead with the try line in sight, a blunder not well appreciated in the post match de-briefing! Steve thought that Scotland began to emerge as a 5 Nations force in 1980, and particularly after the appointment of Jim Telfer, whom he described as an excellent coach and motivator, concentrating on fast ball, fitness and speed. Unfortunately, perhaps because we had run out of time or perhaps because no-one could think of a good question for a Financial Adviser, there were no questions put to Steve but at least he left with a bottle of the much sought after GROGs whisky, although without an even more sought after GROGs tie!
