The attendance at the first Lunch of the 2015-2016 season was, at 75, a bit lower than what can be expected in subsequent months. More’s the pity, as the absentees missed an entertaining insight into the Scottish 7’s rugby scene from its erstwhile captain, Colin Gregor. Before introducing Colin, chairman Gordon Wilson explained he had invited Gregor Townsend and Al Kellock to the Lunch and to bring with them the Pro12 Trophy Warriors had won last season. Unfortunately all 3 were otherwise engaged but Gordon remains hopeful they will attend a future Lunch. The epitome of courtesy as ever, Gordon introduced the most capped Scottish 7’s player ever and 3rd. highest points scorer in the 7’s game, by wondering what his achievements were in “real rugby”. Fortunately our dapper guest spotted Gordon’s tongue well imbedded in his cheek and took no offence. It was impressive that this young man had played to the highest levels, playing professional rugby for 12 years, before signing off his career after a game against England. He left Glasgow Warriors just as they were becoming successful (a coincidence, he assured us) to start his international career in 2003. His first tournament was the Hong Kong Sevens where his initiation included having to sing in front of his team mates. He tried to get his audience to believe that he thought he was doing this in a karaoke bar and not the house of ill repute it turned out to be. Out of a sense of kindness the GROGS pretended to believe him! His best ever experience was at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, particularly the Opening Ceremony, and his worst was at Whitecraigs RFC, which he considers is the wettest place on earth. Colin clearly loved his career in rugby and is now in the process of trying to put something back in through coaching and charity work. The GROGS wish him well with his new career and, in appreciation of his visit, Gordon Wilson presented him with a bottle of the much sought-after GROGS whisky.
