Before the introduction of the guest speaker at the last Lunch of the 2015-16 year Chairman, Gordon Wilson, provided a humorous round-up of the season’s rugby, at the lower levels, then speedily conducted the GROGS AGM, giving details of the 6 charitable donations made. One thing the 108 GROGs who attended were left in no doubt about was why Dominic McKay had been appointed Chief Operating Officer of the SRU. Furthermore, if anyone didn’t quite know exactly what that role entailed, as the old joke goes, “they ken noo”. In what the Chairman later described as “a silver tongued and eloquent speech”, the guest speaker detailed, at length, his role at Murrayfield including all, what he described as, “the fun stuff”. There was no doubt that this former Adrossan Accie player, young enough to be the grandson of a number of his audience, knew his subject. Although he had notes in his hand, he rarely seemed to consult them, if ever. Scottish rugby, he said, has had incredible growth over the last 5 years and there is great potential for this to continue over the next few years. Although the results didn’t quite reflect it, the Scottish rugby team had just completed a successful year, especially in the World Cup. He explained that a function of the governing body is to put resources into grass roots rugby in all parts of Scotland. To this end, a Facility Fund had been established, with current assets of £1.6m, for the benefit of local rugby clubs where facilities were just not good enough. The sound of pens scratching out this particular piece of information to be reported back to sundry club committees was quite audible. Dominic suggested that the 2 things he was most pleased with were the existence of 15,000 season pass ticket holders for Murrayfield and the success of the portability plan of taking some internationals ‘on the road’ to different club grounds around the country. Perhaps anticipating a question on the subject, he assured his audience that all monies earned nationally and internationally by Scottish Rugby stays in Scotland for the betterment of the sport. Dominic earned his “prize’ of a bottle of GROGS whisky by ably dealing with a number of incisive questions from the floor.
