It was a day of mixed emotions for the 110 GROGs who attended the November Lunch. There was disappointment that the scheduled guest speaker, Mike Blair, had to withdraw at the last minute but there was delight that team-mate Peter Murchie was willing to fill his shoes at very short notice - another great Warriors tactical substitution! The temporary Warriors captain is currently injured so it turned out that what was the Warriors’ loss was GROGS’ gain. The GROGs were also delighted in being able to welcome back Roy Dingwall as Chairman after far too long an absence, forced on him by his recent illness. It was a tonic to all to hear, and see, Roy back to his irreverent and humorous best! In introducing Peter Murchie as “the best Glasgow full back in the room today”, Roy explained that Peter qualified to play for Scotland (as he had done) because his father had been born in Ayr and had played for Ardrossan Accies. Like some professional golfers, Peter is a man of many clubs. He described, with a certain modesty, his journey from his first appearance with Bath to his 100+ appearances with the Warriors, calling at Waterloo, Birmingham & Solihull, London Welsh, Dundee HSFP, Stirling County & Aberdeen GSFP en route. For some reason he had earned the nickname “The Relegator”, perhaps because of the fate of some clubs after he left them. Still, he thought this was better than “Psycho” as one of his former teammates was known. Peter ended his entertaining delivery by saying that the 7 years he has spent with Glasgow Warriors have been the best of his rugby career …. thus far. He had nothing negative to say about the club, as everything about it is top class - the management, the Head Coach and staff, his fellow players, all the facilities etc. Listening to such fulsome acclaim, GROGs await the Warriors' announcement regarding the permanent captaincy with interest! To help Peter celebrate when the time comes, he was presented with a bottle of the rare GROGS whisky.
