Those GROGs who weren’t able to make the last fixture of the 2014-15 Lunch season missed out on a rugby tour de force from guest speaker Tappe Henning.  The new Scottish Referees Commissioner won over his audience with a witty, insightful and extremely knowledgeable talk on the joys of rugby refereeing and what the future held for Scottish referees in both national and international dimensions.  He rued the fact that, for the second time running, there was no Scottish official presence at the upcoming Rugby World Cup.  However, he endeared himself by not just believing, not even promising but guaranteeing that this would not be the case at the next but one tournament!  Before Tappe was introduced by Chairman Raymond Healy (himself no mean referee), Roy Dingwall conducted the quickest AGM on record providing the bemused GROGs present with details of the Committee for the following year (no change) and the disbursement of the profits from previous lunches.  Tappe explained, in a thick S.African accent, that his English wasn’t all that sound and then proceeded to make a lie out of his own statement.  For the second time this year we had a speaker who was so on top of his subject that not once did he need to refer to any notes.  His aim is to provide professional match officials in all 3 categories  -  referees, assistant referees and TV match officials as professional players should expect nothing less.  Tappe explained that, to help achieve these aims, he  had surrounded himself with wise people!  He didn’t even blush at this obvious effort to ingratiate himself with Raymond Healy, Fergus Neil and other referees who had gathered to hear him, some of whom were seen to nod in agreement.  He covered a multitude of rugby topics in both his talk and in an extended Question and Answer session, including the usual complaints about the abuse of the scrum; the importance of understanding the ethos of rugby as well as the laws of rugby; that technology is not yet the best friend of rugby and a lament that the post match interaction between teams seems to have disappeared.  All in all, one of the most enjoyable experiences in recent GROGS time.  So much so that Tappe Henning was presented with a GROGS tie and a circular cardboard container purporting to hold a bottle of GROGS whisky!
