Though the Braidholm function suite never appeared overcrowded, a record 119 GROGs attended the November Lunch to be entertained by the ever amusing Gordon Wilson in the Chair, and guest speaker, Dr. Donald MacLeod, President of the S.R.U.  Donald felt he was only there because of the tradition of inviting the SRU President but, of course, nothing was further from the truth.  Probably better known as a Selkirk rugby man through and through, he, himself, pointed out he was the second ‘Souter’ guest speaker in 3 months.  Before the meal started, Donald honoured the GROGS by announcing the names of the Scottish team to play S. Africa the following Sunday.  If old rugby men ever struggle for something to talk and argue about (and they don’t!) then this would have been all they needed.  The chomping was drowned out by the chatter!  The SRU President wasn’t the only guest to travel a distance.  4 Members of our brother club, EROS, had come from Edinburgh (one even having the cheek to win the monthly raffle!) and a new GROG, John Sharp, had apparently driven 250 miles to swell the numbers!   Donald charmed his audience with rugby stories from his first game in 1950 through his years as Scotland Team Doctor up to his current position.  Describing the offices of Vice President and President of the SRU, he provided an absorbing insight into the administration and finances of Scottish Rugby.  All in all, his was an encouraging message, in which he confirmed the Dunlop Report was finally being addressed and all levels of Scottish Rugby were being reviewed.  He answered questions from the floor knowledgeably and went away a happy man with a bottle of GROGS whisky and a GROGS tie, wrapped up, in the best possible taste, in a plastic shopping bag!
